Abstract: 

Behavior analysts working with adults frequently encounter ethical dilemmas that extend beyond technical intervention decisions and require careful consideration of client autonomy, stakeholder values, legal rights, quality of life, and professional responsibilities. This interactive Ethics Chat uses realistic case scenarios to facilitate structured discussion rather than identify a single "correct" course of action. Participants will examine challenging situations involving health-related behaviors, family requests, employment goals, intimate relationships, and community participation while applying the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts to competing ethical obligations. Scenarios explore questions such as whether to intervene when an adult chooses to engage in unhealthy behavior, how to navigate disagreements between clients and family members regarding valued goals, when client preferences should supersede referral objectives, and how to balance autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and public safety when supporting meaningful relationships. Through facilitated discussion, attendees will identify relevant ethical standards and consider practical strategies for collaborative decision-making with clients, families, and interdisciplinary teams. The session emphasizes ethical reasoning, person-centered practice, and the complexities of supporting adults whose goals, preferences, and support needs may differ from those of other stakeholders.
