Culturally responsive practice is essential for behavior analysts seeking to provide ethical, effective, and socially valid services across diverse communities. This shared learning experience will explore three pillars of cultural humility 1)lifelong self-reflection and learning 2) addressing power imbalances, and 3) instituational accountability serve as a foundation for culturally responsive care. Participants will examine practical strategies for integrating clients’ cultural values, identities, and lived experiences into assessment, intervention, collaboration, and supervision practices. Through discussion and self reflection, attendees will gain tools to create more inclusive, affirming, and equitable environments that strengthen therapeutic relationships, improve client outcomes, and support meaningful, person-centered service delivery.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Identify and describe the three pillars of cultural humility and explain how they support culturally responsive behavior-analytic practice.
  • Personally reflect on at least two ways cultural values, identities, and lived experiences may influence their assessment, intervention, collaboration, or supervision practices in behavior analysis.
  • List at least three strategies to create a more inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive environments that strengthen therapeutic relationships and improve client outcomes in your practice.

Presenter Expertise: 

Patricia Wright, PhD, is Executive Director of Proof Positive and a behavior analyst whose scholarship focuses on equitable, culturally responsive autism service delivery. Her expertise in cultural humility is directly demonstrated by her authorship of "Cultural Humility in the Practice of Applied Behavior Analysis" (Behavior Analysis in Practice, 2019), a peer-reviewed article examining how access to ABA intervention is inequitable and cultural differences are not adequately addressed in practice. Her related work includes research on decreasing disparities in autism service delivery, reflecting a sustained focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in behavior-analytic practice.
