Abstract: Behavior analysis is on the cusp fundamental paradigm shift in how we conceptualize and address disability. Moving beyond models which focus on individual deficits, we examine disability through a radical behaviorist lens as a phenomenon emerging from the interaction between individual characteristics and environmental contexts. Drawing from the social, human rights, and biopsychosocial models of disability, this presentation operationalizes disability as a contextual variable subject to environmental manipulation rather than a fixed individual trait. Through practical examples and theoretical frameworks, participants will learn how rigid environments, lack of accommodations, and societal barriers create disability, while flexible, responsive environments can eliminate or reduce disabling conditions. The presentation challenges what some consider traditional ABA approaches rooted in the pathology paradigm, particularly the goal of "indistinguishability," and proposes constructional approaches that honor neurodiversity while addressing genuine support needs. By reconceptualizing disability as an operant phenomenon, behavior analysts can move from attempting to "fix" individuals to creating supportive environments that enable participation and autonomy for all.
