ABA CPT Codes Update

Industry News ,

The ABA Coding Coalition (composed of APBA, Autism Speaks, the BACB, and CASP), in collaboration with the ABAI Billing Codes Commission, is pleased to announce that a code change application submitted to the American Medical Association (AMA) CPT® Editorial Panel was approved during the Panel’s September 2025 meeting.

The publicly available CPT Panel action memorandum from the September CPT meeting states “Please be aware that these actions are a reflection of the discussions at the most recent Panel meeting. Disclosure of Panel action and deliberation is limited to the information contained in this Summary of Actions. Premature release of coding information other than that contained in this document is prohibited under the CPT Confidentiality Agreement. Codes are not assigned, nor exact wording finalized, until just prior to publication. Release of more specific CPT code set information is timed with the release of the entire set of coding changes in the CPT publication.”

Although the specific changes to the adaptive behavior services code set remain confidential until released by the AMA, we can share that the Panel accepted the following changes to our code set:

  • The addition of six new CPT codes.

  • The revision of codes 97151-97158.

  • The revision of guidelines around usage of the code set.

  • Deletion of the existing T codes.

Detailed information will be distributed to providers and payers at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, all parties must adhere to all AMA CPT confidentiality rules.

Changes to the code set will take effect on January 1, 2027 and will be included in the 2027 CPT® Professional Code book, which will be published late in 2026.
